Before you start your renovation, you need a bathroom renovation checklist to help you on your journey.
Renovating a bathroom is the perfect way to update the look and feel of your home and improve your bathroom.
It’s also a great way to improve functionality so that you can enjoy an essential space.
But where do you start with the whole process?
Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered!
We’ve put together a Bathroom Renovation Checklist to get you started on your journey towards a new bathroom.
To start, it’s really important that you’ve thought about what you want and like.

Our Bathroom Renovation Checklist is more about your discovery of your bathroom needs and wants, in other words putting together your thoughts and ideas and processing them.
The process of gathering and collating your ideas can be time consuming, but it will pay off when the end product is something that you expected and are happy with.
We’ve included this as part of our checklist to get you started.

Let’s look at each point in detail.
1. Collect some ideas
To get ideas, start looking at magazines, other people’s bathrooms (with their permission, of course), go online etc.. These sources will provide a wealth of visual information that gets your brain thinking. The only challenge is to try not get fixated on one idea. Keep an open mind!
2. Collate your ideas
Print your ideas and put them in a scrapbook or hang them to create a vision board on a wall. You can use online image websites to collate ideas you’ve found.
Another option is to save any online ideas by bookmarking them in your internet browser, or saving a picture/taking a screenshot and creating a photo album with your findings on your device.
3. Share your ideas with some trusted friends, family and colleagues
Trusted friends, family and colleagues are a good check to see whether your ideas are you.
People closer to you sometimes know you better than you think.
Hopefully, they will be honest, ask you questions and pushback appropriately. Be open to hearing their ideas and move to the next point.

4. Check to see whether your ideas match up with the style of your house
It’s important that you do this as the renovation may flow into other areas of home, e.g. the entrance of the bathroom doesn’t match the style of bathroom or, you may need to modify the entrance and surrounds to complement the design.
5. Keep refining your ideas by removing or adding previous and new ideas accordingly
Try to make your ideas fluid and flexible, not set in stone. This will help in case they need to be changed later.
6. Note the areas that are going to be affected by the bathroom renovation
It’s important that you look at the renovation ‘holistically’ rather than just that room.
For instance, say there is an adjoining room to the bathroom, will the renovators need access to the wall adjacent to the bathroom? Or will the renovation possibly cut into that room if something larger is required in the new bathroom?
Theses are things that need to be considered.
7. Make some ‘guesstimates’ on how much you think it will cost
This is where you put your ideas on costs together ready for investigating potential renovators.
8. Consider your plan for financing this project
Do you have the cash to do the bathroom renovation?
Do you need to borrow for the renovation?
The main thing here is to make sure you’ve got an understanding of where you will be potentially drawing the funds for the project.
9. Research Bathroom Renovators
There are going to be plenty of people and organisations you can approach to do your renovation. What we will say for the industry is that whoever you choose check the following:
- Are they qualified builders, plumbers and trades people?
- Do they have any awards for their work?
- Do they have testimonials you can review?
- Is there work you can see?
- Can you communicate with them easily?
- What’s their method of payment?
- Will they take periodic payments?
- Do they have a project management plan?
